Before January began, I predicted the Mocs to go 3-5 during the month. That's what they did. Exactly. They beat Samford, The Citadel, and Appalachian State, and lost to Georgia Tech, College of Charleston, Western Carolina, Elon, and UNCG.
So what do we make of the Mocs?
After starting 3-2 in the month, meaning that the Mocs were 6-2 in their last eight games, the Mocs lost three straight games to end the month. There were blowout losses to College of Charleston and Elon. They played relatively OK against Georgia Tech.
The Dontay Hampton injury was the biggest news of the month of January. I truly feel sorry for Hampton and wish him nothing but the best. I truly hope that he gets to come out onto the floor in the Mocs final home game and get to have one more basket in front of the home crowd. Hampton was a special player- not one of the all-time greats by any means, but one of the more enjoyable players.
Hampton will be missed.
Still the Mocs played themselves into and out of the North race during the month of January. They are more than likely out of the bye race in the SoCon Tournament and will be playing for seeding from now on.
The Mocs month was disappointing. But in the end, the Mocs did not totally destroy their chances of getting up to fifth in the SoCon seeding. They are only 1.5 games out of fifth. They can get there, but they need a good February.
GO MOCS!
