No Trevis Simpson? No problem for the Spartans.
There began to be a rumor circulating around the internet last night, that seemed to be refuted, that the Spartans would be without Simpson tonight and possibly for the rest of the year. In the end, Simpson did not play. He was in a boot. This surely would spell doom for the Spartans, right? Against a motivated and hot College of Charleston?
Not so fast. Derrell Armstrong poured home 30 points, Aloysius Henry scored 22, and Kyle Randall put in 12. Those three by themselves outscored the entire Charleston lineup. The Cougars now find themselves up just one half game on Furman in the South standings, and down two full games on Wofford. The Spartans on the other hand are up now by two full games on Elon for the North lead.
It's hard to believe that UNCG can keep on winning like that if Simpson is out for a while. But the fact is that the Spartans are in excellent shape for winning the division at this point. With the win and the Samford loss, they clinch no worse than a bye in the SoCon Tournament, which is critical, because no team has ever won the tournament without a bye. Any combination of two wins and Elon losses will get the Spartans the division title.
