Double Dribbles- 12-1-11

1) Elon's win over Furman proved a couple of things. For one, Furman is better than people expect. This game was not always pretty- in fact, it was ugly at times. My guess is that both teams will play games like this. They make the other team look out of sorts. They both play solid defense, and both try to take the other team out of what they are doing offensively. Obviously. That's the point of defense, right? But few teams do it better than these two teams do. The Phoenix are just a little bit better at it. But the Paladins are a threat for the third place spot in the South division, which at this point looks pretty wide open. Depending on how Wofford looks against Davidson on Thursday, Furman may have even turned into the favorite for that third spot.

2) The SoCon season opens on Thursday night for the remaining ten teams. There are previews on this blog of the Chattanooga-Georgia Southern game and the Davidson-Wofford game. Western Carolina's trip to Samford is absolutely critical for the Catamounts to get back on the winning track. The Citadel heads to College of Charleston in a great rivalry match-up, and UNCG faces off with Appalachian State. This is a big game for the Spartans to try to get back on track in a huge division road game. Everything that has happened up until now doesn't matter unless your team name is Davidson or College of Charleston. It all begins today. I, for one, can't wait to start seeing the conference races play out a little bit. It won't play out much this weekend...but it will be enough for me.
