It's not my personal choice (I picked The Citadel in the All-Military Classic, but I knew I would be in the minority there). This week, two games were picked by the Scanning the SoCon crowd for top game of the week. The games were either Western Carolina's trip to UNC-Asheville or Elon's trip to Butler.
So, which game did I select as the game that will get extra breakdowns this week?
I went with Western Carolina's trip to UNC-Asheville. The Catamounts are one of the favorites in the North Division and UNCA was picked to finish third in the South Division of the Big South, behind Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. UNCA did receive five first place votes in the division this year.
This is a set of important games for the SoCon. They want to stay ahead of the Big South in the pecking order and the RPI. To do that, teams like Western Carolina need to beat UNCA, and UNCG needs to take care of High Point. This is a very big game for the SoCon as they try to sort out exactly where they stand this year.
In other words, any team hoping to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament this year (Davidson...ahem!) needs to be cheering for Western Carolina here. Any team hoping for a high seed in the NCAA Tournament (that's all of us) needs Western Carolina to win. On top of that, any team playing in this game hoping to start 1-0 (that's you Western Carolina) needs Western Carolina to win.
Look for a preview coming Thursday and a recap coming Friday.
