Pomeroy's Rankings

OK- let's talk about Pomeroy's rankings a little bit.

I get it. We don't beat teams by a lot. And the Mocs tend to get beaten down when they lose. This leads to a ranking system that relies on point differential to put the Mocs lower in the rankings than one that does not take that into account.

But- how can the Mocs be behind Elon, a team they beat twice? How can they be behind The Citadel, a team they beat on the road?

If they could get ahead of those two teams, then I would have a lot less problem with their ranking according to Pomeroy. It just doesn't make sense when you look at the rankings that the Mocs would be that far down, as the only team with double digit conference wins so far. Of course, these are also based on the out of conference schedule. The Mocs are one of four teams in the SoCon with a winning record overall, and yet are ranked ninth according to Pomeroy.

Also, his rankings give the Mocs just a 12% chance of beating Davidson, and a 14% chance of beating Western Carolina, not to mention a 21% chance of beating Appalachian State. I just don't think the Mocs should be considered that much of an underdog in these upcoming games. If the Mocs can take one of these road games, maybe they will move up in the rankings a lot. We'll have to wait and see.

I normally think Pomeroy does a good job with his rankings, but it doesn't seem to be doing a great job of ranking the Mocs right now because of their tendency to play close games.

GO MOCS!
