UNCG again showed the defensive inefficiency that has been plaguing them this year. Wake Forest had an eFG% of 59.8. That is absolutely atrocious. It is hard for the defense to be worse than that. On top of that Wake Forest shot 32 free throws, making 23 of them. That's 32 free throws and 51 field goal attempts. Wow. That's not good either.
So UNCG's defense was bad. There's no doubt about that. Derrell Armstrong did score 16 points. That indefinite suspension is apparently over, and Armstrong was back with a vengeance. That's good for the Spartans. Trevis Simpson was a stud, but what else is new? He scored 25 points. The Spartans show just 42.4% from the floor.
What happens with the Spartans from here? Well, they are now 2-8. They have North Carolina State and Davidson coming up in their next two games. That's not particularly promising. They play their next three conference games after that at Western Carolina, at Appalachian State, and at home against Wofford. This is a really tough stretch for the Spartans. Yes, Lees-Mcrae is prior to those three SoCon games, but they could easily be 3-13 and 1-3 in the SoCon. Ouch.
For a team with such high hopes before the season, the season does feel like it is unraveling a bit right now. Are they as bad as their record indicates? I'd say probably not. But they are no longer considered one of the two favorites to win the North, and I think they are closer to the other three teams in the North than they are to the top two right now.
It is time to turn this thing around. The Spartans offense likes to play one on one. The Spartans defense doesn't like to do much. The Spartans have no inside game. This is a season on the brink. Is it time to hit the panic button? Not quite- but it's close.
