Strength of Schedule

The Mocs have not exactly played a Who's Who of college basketball so far this year. With games against Tennessee and Louisville highlighting the schedule, there have been entirely mid-majors other than that.

On the other hand UNC-Greensboro (who was destroyed by Maryland tonight) has already played Florida State, Virginia Tech, VCU, and East Carolina. Sure VCU and East Carolina are not majors, but VCU is probably perceived as stronger than most teams we have played so far.

Yet, the Mocs schedule (according to RealTimeRPI.com) ranks as 113th in the country heading into tonight- while UNCG's ranks 138th. In fact, the Mocs have played the fifth toughest schedule in the conference, behind Appalachian State, Wofford, Davidson, and barely behind Elon (who ranks 111th). So, this "easier schedule" that the Mocs have supposedly faced this year has not exactly been layered with cream puffs.

Right now, the Mocs own wins over two Top 100 RPI teams- Appalachian State (51) and Marshall (66). Marshall was a road win over a Top 100 team.

Jackson State's RPI actually ranks as 73 at the moment, mostly due to their tough schedule. Only Austin Peay, Kennesaw State, FIU, and Western Carolina do not rank in the Top 100 of the Mocs opponents so far. The Mocs went 2-2 in those games, and 2-3 against the Top 100. Very strange what the Mocs have done so far. They have been wildly inconsistent.

Murray State's current RPI is 82.

By the way, RealTimeRPI projects the Mocs to go 7-11 in conference play and 11-19 overall.

GO MOCS!
