Austin Peay 89, Chattanooga 57

Embarrassing.

There are few other words to describe it.

Humiliating.

Humbling.

Disgusting.

The Mocs did outrebound Austin Peay, so that is a positive, I suppose. They had sixteen offensive rebounds, which is also a positive.

Troy Cage had 13 points and was the Mocs leading scorer. Ricky Taylor and Chris Early both were in double figures with 12.

But the Mocs were awful defensively, allowing the Governors to shoot precisely 50% from the floor and 40.7% from three point range. The Mocs shot a horrific 23.7% from the field, and 19.2% from three point range.

The Mocs made 24 of 28 free throws. That is a very positive statistic.

Nineteen turnovers will get the Mocs destroyed every time.

OK- I know this is disjointed. Here's the deal. The Mocs got blasted and allowed an opponent to shoot too well from the floor. That was the second straight poor defensive effort. The last time that happened was against Jackson State and FIU. The Mocs followed that up with wins over Appalachian State and Western Carolina. We can only hope that happens again when the Mocs visit UNCG and The Citadel. The Mocs need to play better defense and need to shoot better. Beyond that, there's nothing to fix. The effort was there to some degree. They got 16 offensive rebounds on 44 opportunities, which is pretty good.

The season is not lost at this point. This was BAD. Make no mistake. But let's not give up on the season quite yet. This was a decent Austin Peay team that is 4-0 in the OVC and now 10-6 overall, including overtime losses to Oakland and Memphis. This is not a bad team. What is so disheartening is how close the Mocs came the first time and to see them look like they had taken two steps back since then.

Very humbling, indeed.

GO MOCS!
