The Mocs beat Tennessee Wesleyan 103-60 in an exhibition game. Based purely on following the live stats, and looking at the box score, this appears to be a good showing.
Ricky Taylor scored 27, including making 6 of 8 three pointers. Ridge McKeither scored 17 (15 of them came very early on). McKeither also collected eight rebounds. Keegan Bell's stats do not look overly impressive. He made 1 of 7 shots, all of them threes. He had five assists, but four turnovers. Josh Odem had six assists and six rebounds, along with four points.
The biggest complaint is that they only made 9 of 22 free throws. That's not good. That can not happen. The Mocs have to be a better free throw shooting team than that if they want to win a lot of games this year.
It was the first game, though. Things will get better.
On a positive note, the Mocs made 14 of 33 threes, or 42.4%. That's a very positive sign for the team. Like I said pregame, threes and free throws are not as effected by opponent, so I wanted to see good shooting from both spots. One out of two isn't bad.
The starters were Keegan Bell, Ricky Taylor, Josh Odem, Ridge McKeither, and Jeremy Saffore. Most people thought that Jefferson was the clear cut starter over Saffore, but Saffore got the first start. We'll see if that continues. Saffore scored 10 points with three rebounds in eighteen minutes. Jefferson scored 13 points with six rebounds in nineteen minutes.
Last year, the Mocs beat Tennessee Wesleyan 102-70. They won by eleven more points tonight. In this kind of blowout, that sort of difference means very little. But the good news is that the Mocs are in the ball park of last year's team. That's a start.
And that's all that we were looking for tonight.
