Before the month began, people were down on the Mocs. They were 3-5 on the SoCon season. They were struggling, but there was hope, because the Mocs had six home games in seven games coming up in February.
What was going to develop for the Mocs? Were they going to have success or was the season going to go a negative way?
I picked the Mocs to go 4-5, with wins over The Citadel, Furman, UNCG, and either Wofford, Elon, College of Charleston, or Samford. In the end the Mocs only won two of the three I thought they would definitely beat. They beat Elon and Samford (better than Wofford or UNCG), and then won at Western Carolina in a shocking twist. They wound up going 5-4.
They took a really unusual route to get there. But they got there. And now the Mocs head into March with a meaningful regular season game left, along with a SoCon Tournament that they should not feel terrible about.
If the Mocs beat Appalachian State and Western Carolina beats Samford, the Mocs will get the fourth bye. Given where this team was, that is really surprising. They are playing well at the right time of year.
Of course, that could all change tomorrow. The Mocs lost in blowouts to UNCG and Wofford. That was awful. The Mocs won against better teams Elon, Samford and Western Carolina. They also nearly beat College of Charleston at home. A blowout to Appalachian State would change my view on the Mocs end season as much as any game possibly could.
February saw Gee McGhee get into the race for Freshman of the Year and Z Mason become a contender for Player of the Year, and solidify himself as an All SoCon performer.
We'll see what March brings, but February was good enough.
GO MOCS!
