Keegan Bell: Remembering the Shot

On January 14, 2010, the Mocs were battling The Citadel in Chattanooga. The Mocs were leading 49-42 when the Bulldogs scored with 6:52 remaining in the game. With 1:01 left, the Bulldogs completed the comeback when Cameron Wells made a layup to take a 54-53 lead.

With three seconds left, Sam Watson came up with a block on Wells and grabbed the ball. The Mocs called a timeout and set up a play. That play lead to Keegan Bell pulling up from three and draining it. The Mocs won 56-54.

Bell ended with eleven points, tied for the team high with Ricky Taylor.

After that game, the Mocs were 11-6 and 3-1 in the SoCon. After that, the Mocs went 4-12. The Mocs have gone 30-46 since that day, a 39.5% winning percentage.

On a day that featured sophomores Taylor and Bell being the leading scorers with eleven points, and a day that Bell hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer, who knew that would be the high point for the Mocs?

Regardless, that shot has lingered as a bright spot for Mocs fans as they have remembered Keegan Bell's career, much the way we are likely to remember Dontay Hampton's lay-up against Appalachian State for the win this year.

I honestly think Keegan Bell has established himself as one of the all-time greats at Chattanooga. I don't know how you can doubt this. Sure- the Mocs have not won as much as they have with previous players. That being said, Bell is the all-time leader in assists. At a school like Chattanooga, for a guy to be the all-time leader in assists has to establish him as one of the all-time greats. Is he in the Top Five? Top Ten? Top 25? I don't know. But we will be talking about Bell years from now, because of the record he holds. He has a great assist-to-turnover ratio. He is a truly special player and deserves all the accolades he has received.

I know people don't want to give him credit because of the winning percentage the Mocs have on his watch. But that's a little unfair to him. He has been a great point guard, if not a great shooter. Plus he has "the moment" with that shot against The Citadel two years ago. There's no way we won't be talking about him in the years to come. That establishes him as one of the all-time-greats.

GO MOCS!
