SoCon Monday Review

Samford 76, Furman 68

Key Stat: Samford 39 rebounds, Furman 30. The Bulldogs collected 39 rebounds and the Paladins only got 30. The Bulldogs had ten offensive rebounds and Palains had five offensive rebounds. That was the main difference in why the Bulldogs were able to come from ten points down and win- they simply controlled the boards.

Player of the Game: Tim Williams. Williams had 16 points and ten rebounds. He shot 6 of 9 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the free throw line. He had three offensive rebounds and seven defensive rebounds. He also had one assist and one steal.

What It All Means: Samford absolutely had to win this game. There was no way around it. With Chattanooga and Davidson coming to Samford this week, the Bulldogs had to win to stay in the bye race heading into a huge weekend of home games. Samford was behind by ten points early in the second half, but then wound up winning relatively easily. The Bulldogs are one and a half games out of the final bye. They need to split this weekend, it would appear. Furman is now 1-8 in SoCon play. The Paladins put themselves in a position to win this one early in the second half, and Stephen Croone had a tremendous game. But they just aren't good enough at this point to win a lot of SoCon games. It is going to be a couple of rebuilding years before they are back where they would like to be.
